Deluxe Fashion House of Dolce & Gabbana was founded in Legnano, Itay by Dominico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in 1985.
Domenico Dolce, born on 13 August 1958 in Sicily and after dropping out of a three-year course in fashion design at Marangoni Institute had the dream of working for Giorgio Armani in mind, so he carried his book of sketches over one day to Armani's headquarter and handed it to the secretary. He never learnt whether Armani saw his designs or not.
Dolce found a job as an assistant to a designer named Giorgio Correggiari. One night at a club, he met a young man named Stefano Gabbana (born on 14 November 1962 in Milan, Italy). Dolce was impressed with Gabbana's good looks and outgoing personality and Gabbana was happy to hear Dolce's advice on how to approach Correggiari for a job. Accordingly, Correggiari ended up hiring Gabbana to work on sportswear, and Dolce taught him how to sketch and the basics of tailoring, and in the process they became an Art Couple.
Soon after his hiring, Gabbana was conscripted for 18 months of mandatory military service, but in 1983, after his return in 1982, they had parted ways with Correggiari and were living together in a one-room loft where they often practised sketching. Dolce: "We always filed two different invoices for the freelance work we did, even when we were working for the same client". Gabbana: "Our accountant said, 'Why don’t we just do one invoice for both of you? Put Dolce and Gabbana at the top'". So the brand was born, the brainchild of a Milanese bookkeeper.
They exhibited their first women collection in 1985 in Milan where they open their boutique the following year. In 1988, knitted clothing line including long leg trousers and blouses was established and they started designing underwear and bathing suits afterwards. Then, in 1990, they launched their first showroom in U.S.A in addition of exporting their own products to Japan and other countries as America. Beside the first men collection, Dolce & Gabbana’s fragrances were introduced to the world for the first time. Gaining “Woolmark” prize in 1991 and “Most Feminine Flavor of the Year" prize in 1993 popularized it in the globe, so that in the late 90s, Dolce & Gabbana could reach 500 million dollar sales. In 2009, the first cosmetic line of Dolce & Gabbana was established and in the late 2011, the brand entered Jewelry world by submitting the first jewelry collection of 80 pieces.
Dolce & Gabbana Co. had two main lines by 2012 as follow: Dolce & Gabanna (Exclusively for luxurious, classical and formal products along with valuable productions as glasses, purses, watches and fragrances in addition to the clothing) and D&G (Younger and luxurious line of Dolce & Gabbana as diffusion line which was a cheaper line presented watches and outfits which hadn’t been designed by the brand). In 2011, to focus more on the main line, Dolce & Gabbana made a decision to terminate D&G line and in 2012, the activity of this line completely stopped.
It is noteworthy to mention that her bravery in designing, thoughtfulness and adherenceto the principles ofart is a unique incorporation that differentiates Dolce&Gabbana’s glasses in the optical world.
